Questions & Answers
Why shouldn't I just create a nonprofit on my own?
You can certainly do this on your own, but if you feel too busy (or too impatient) to spend time learning the ins and outs of startup and completing the paperwork on your own, this engagement will ease the pressure and save you time.
Is this legal assistance?
No, it's not. This is "technical assistance," meaning I'll follow available instructions for completing state & federal paperwork. To be sure you comply with all other laws, you'll need a legal review. (I'll remind you!)
What if I'm not ready to file the forms?
This engagement is all about action; so it's best to start this work when you're ready to file your state & federal forms.
Why shouldn't I use an online legal service?
You're right; that's an option. Chances are, a legal service will give you a checklist to fill out so they can prepare your paperwork.
They can make sure your paperwork meets all legal requirements, but they probably can't coach you through the answers to some of the questions you'll have to answer first.
Many of their questions don't relate to legal matters. I coach you through those leadership decisions during this project.
How long will it take to create a nonprofit?
It depends. You and I will schedule 1-on-1 time together so I can coach you and gather information for the forms. So your availability and the time you need to make key decisions is one factor.
Also, state and federal turn-around times for processing your paperwork vary.
I help you recruit and train your first board of directors, too. So board member availability will be another factor.
Given all this, on average, expect about 4 to 8 weeks to complete our work together.
